What is an affix?
কোন বর্ণ (letter) বা বর্ণ সমষ্টি যখন কোন মূল শব্দের (root word) আগে বা পরে ব্যবহৃত হয়ে নুতন একটি শব্দ (word) গঠন করে, তখন সেই বর্ণ বা বর্ণ সমষ্টিকে affix বলে। Affix দুই প্রকার, যেমন 1. Prefix এবং 2. Suffix.
Prefix বলতে কি বুঝায়?
নুতন একটি শব্দ গঠন করার জন্য কোন মূল শব্দের (root word) আগে যে এক বা একাধিক বর্ণ বা অক্ষর (letter) যুক্ত হয়, তাকেই prefix বলে। A prefix is a letter or a group of letters placed before the root of a word to make a new word.
Example:
- root word- pure: impure
- root word- kind: unkind
- root word- rich: enrich
Prefix-এর ব্যবহার:
1. Prefix-এর প্রথম ব্যবহার হচ্ছে মূল শব্দের বিপরীত শব্দ (antonym) গঠন করা:
(a) যে adjective শব্দগুলো সাধারনত: A, C, D, S এবং V দ্বারা শুরু হয়, তাদের পূর্বে ‘in’ prefix যুক্ত করে বিপরীত adjective শব্দ (antonym) গঠন করা হয়।
Example:
- ability – সামর্থ্য – inability: He expressed his inability to do it.
- active – কর্মঠ; সক্রিয় – inactive: He is an inactive person.
- accurate – সঠিক – inaccurate: This is an inaccurate answer.
- adequate – পর্যাপ্ত; যথেষ্ট – inadequate: This amount of money is totally inadequate for this purpose.
- applicable – প্রযোজ্য – inapplicable: This is completely inapplicable to it.
- attentive – মনোযোগী – inattentive: He is inattentive to his studies.
- appropriate – উপযুক্ত – inappropriate: It is an inappropriate answer.
- capable – সক্ষম – incapable: He is incapable to do it.
- complete – সম্পূর্ণ – incomplete: Your answer is incomplete.
- conceivable – বোধগম্য – inconceivable: It is an inconceivable matter.
- correct – সঠিক – incorrect: Your answer is incorrect.
- conspicuous – সুস্পষ্ট বা সহজে দর্শনযোগ্য- inconspicuous: That was an inconspicuous red-brick building.
- credible – বিশ্বাসযোগ্য – incredible: The story of the book is incredible.
- convenient – সুবিধাজনক – inconvenient: This will be inconvenient for me to go there.
- consistent – সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ – inconsistent: His answer to this question is inconsistent.
- competent – উপযুক্ত; যোগ্য; দক্ষ – incompetent: He is an incompetent cricket player.
- considerate – বিবেচক – inconsiderate: He is an inconsiderate person.
- credulous – বিশ্বাসপ্রবণ – incredulous: He gave me an incredulous description.
- decent – সুন্দর – indecent: That was an indecent proposal.
- direct – সরাসরি; প্রত্যক্ষ – indirect: He gave me an indirect answer.
- definite – নিদির্ষ্ট – indefinite: The school was closed for an indefinite period.
- distinct – অস্পষ্ট; ক্ষীন – indistinct: His voice was indistinct, so I could not understand anything.
- dependent – নির্ভরশীল – independent – He was an independent businessman.
- sane – মানসিকভাবে সুস্থ বা স্বাভাবিক – insane: He is insane.
- secure – নিরাপদ – insecure: I feel insecure to stay here.
- significant – তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ – insignificant: This is an insignificant question.
- sincere – আন্তরিক – insincere: He is an insincere person.
- sufficient – যথেষ্ট – insufficient: This amount of money is insufficient.
- solvent – সচ্ছল – insolvent: He became insolvent.
- sensible – বিচারবুদ্ধি সম্পন্ন – insensible: It is an insensible decision.
- valid – বৈধ – invalid: Your passport has been invalid.
- visible – দৃশ্যমান – invisible: Love is invisible.
Prefix ‘in’ যুক্ত করে আরো যে সকল মূল শব্দের বিপরীত শব্দ গঠন করা যায়, তারা হলো:
- efficient – দক্ষ – inefficient – He is an inefficient person.
- glorious – গৌরবময় – inglorious. Pakistan had an inglorious defeat in 1971.
- hospitable – অতিথিসেবাপরায়ণ – inhospitable – He is an inhospitable person.
- gratitude – কৃতজ্ঞতা – ingratitude – His ingratitude surprised me.
- decision – সিদ্ধান্ত – indecision -He has been suffering from indecision.
- tolerance – সহনশীলতা – intolerance –Intolerance often brings failure.
- tolerable – সহনীয় – intolerable – He is an intolerable person.
- human – মানবীয় – inhuman -His inhuman act surprised all.
- finite – সীমাবদ্ধ বা সীমা আছে এমন – infinite – We enjoy the infinite mercy of Almighty Allah.
- discreet – বিচক্ষন বা পরিমানদর্শী – indiscreet – It was indiscreet of you to tell this thing.
- dependence – নির্ভরশীলতা – independence – Everybody wants independence.
- capability – সক্ষমতা – incapability – I am sorry for my incapability of doing the right thing.
- ability – সামর্থ্য – inability – He showed his inability to accept the new decision.
(b) যে adjective শব্দগুলো সাধারনত: ’M’ এবং ‘P’ দ্বারা শুরু হয়, তাদের পূর্বে ‘im’ prefix যুক্ত করে বিপরীত adjective শব্দ (antonym) গঠন করা হয়।
Example:
- mature – পরিপক্ক – immature
- modest – বিনয়ী – immodest
- moral – নৈতিক – immoral
- mortal – মরণশীল – immortal
- moderate – পরিমিত – immoderate
- movable – চলমান – immovable
- perfect – নিখুঁত – imperfect
- patient – ধৈর্যশীল – impatience
- pure – বিশুদ্ধ – impure
- possible – সম্ভব – impossible
- polite – নম্র: ভদ্র – impolite
- prudent – বিচক্ষন; পরিমানদর্শী – imprudent
- personal – ব্যক্তিগত – impersonal
- partial – আংশিক – impartial
(c) যে adjective শব্দগুলো সাধারনত: ’L’ দ্বারা শুরু হয়, তাদের পূর্বে ‘il’ prefix যুক্ত করে বিপরীত adjective শব্দ (antonym) গঠন করা হয়।
Example:
- legal – বৈধ; আইনগত –illegal
- legitimate – বৈধ – illegitimate
- legible – সহজপাঠ্য; সহজে পড়া যায় এমন – illegible
- liberal – উদার – illiberal
- literate – অক্ষর জ্ঞান সম্পন্ন – illiterate
- logical – যৌতিক – illogical
(d) যে adjective শব্দগুলো সাধারনত: ’R’ দ্বারা শুরু হয়, তাদের পূর্বে ‘ir’ prefix যুক্ত করে বিপরীত adjective শব্দ (antonym) গঠন করা হয়।
Example:
- rational – যুক্তিসংগত – irrational
- regular – নিয়মিত – irregular
- relevant – সামন্জস্যপূর্ণ; প্রাসঙ্গিক – irrelevant
- responsible – দায়ী – irresponsible
- religious – ধর্মীয় – irreligious
- repairable – মেরামতযোগ্য – irreparable
- reconcilable -পুর্নগঠনযোগ্য – irreconcilable
- resistible – প্রতিরোধযোগ্য – irresistible
- resolute – সংকল্প; স্থিরমনা – irresolute
(e) কিছু শব্দ রয়েছে, যাদের পূর্বে prefix হিসাবে ‘dis’ যুক্ত করে বিপরীত শব্দ (antonym) গঠন করা হয়।
Example:
- agree – সম্মত হওয়া – disagree
- allow – অনুমতি দেওয়া – disallow
- appear – নজরে আসা – disappear
- advantage – সুবিধা – disadvantage
- approve – অনুমোদন দেওয়া – disapprove
- approval – অনুমোদন – disapproval
- arrange – সুবিন্যস্ত করা – disarrange
- belief – বিশ্বাস – disbelief
- believe – বিশ্বাস করা – disbelieve
- content – সন্তোষ বা সন্তষ্টি – discontent
- claim – দাবী করা – disclaim
- connect – সংযুক্ত করা – disconnect
- comfort – আরাম – discomfort

(f) এমন অনেক শব্দ রয়েছে, যাদের পূর্বে prefix হিসাবে ‘un’ যুক্ত করে বিপরীত শব্দ (antonym) গঠন করা হয়।
Example:
- able – সমর্থ – unable
- attractive – আকর্ষনীয় – unattractive
- comfortable – আরামদায়ক – uncomfortable
- dress – পোশাক – undress
- easy – সহজ – uneasy
- ease – আরাম – unease
- grateful – কৃতজ্ঞ – ungrateful
- healthy – স্বাস্থ্যবান – unhealthy
- kind – দয়ালু – unkind
- necessary – প্রয়োজনীয় – unnecessary
- natural – স্বাভাবিক – unnatural
- popular – জনপ্রিয় – unpopular
- pleasant – সুখকর; আনন্দদায়ক – unpleasant
- social – সামাজিক – unsocial
- wise – জ্ঞানী – unwise
- reliable – বিশ্বাসযোগ্য – unreliable
- rest – বিশ্রাম – unrest
- safe – নিরাপদ – unsafe
- successful – অকৃতকার্য – unsuccessful
- selfish – স্বার্থপর – unselfish
- stable – স্থায়ী; টেকসই – unstable
- truth – সত্যতা – untruth
- willing – ইচ্ছুক – unwilling
(g) এমন অনেক শব্দ রয়েছে, যাদের পূর্বে ’a’, ‘de’, ‘extra’, ‘mis’ প্রভৃতি prefix যুক্ত করে উক্ত শব্দের বিপরীত শব্দ গঠন করা হয়।
Example:
- theist – আস্তিক বা অস্তিত্বে বিশ্বাস করে যে – atheist – যে অস্তিত্বে বিশ্বাস করে না
- value – মূল্য – devalue – মূল্য কমানো
- moralize – নীতিকথা শোনানো; উৎসাহিত করা – demoralize – মনোবল নষ্ট করা
- form – আকার – deform – বিকৃত করা
- merit – গুন বা ভালো দিক – demerit – মন্দদিক; দোষ
- ordinary – সাধারন – extraordinary – অসাধারণ
- spell – বানান করা – misspell – ভূল বানান করা
- deed – কাজ – misdeed – খারাপ কাজ
- behave – আচরণ করা – misbehave – বাজে আচরণ করা
- apply – আরোপ করা বা প্রয়োগ করা – misapply – ভূলভাবে বা ভূল উদ্দেশ্যে প্রয়োগ করা
- apprehend – উপলদ্ধি করা – misapprehend – বুঝতে না পারা; ভূল বুঝা
- fortunate – ভাগ্যবান – misfortunate – দূভাগ্য: দূর্দশা
- management – ব্যবস্থাপনা – mismanagement – অব্যবস্থাপনা
- understand – বুঝতে পারা – misunderstand – ভূল বুঝা
2. Prefix-এর দ্বিতীয় ব্যবহার হচ্ছে মূল শব্দের অন্য part of speech গঠন করা:
(a) কিছু noun ও adjective শব্দের পূর্বে prefix হিসাবে ‘be’ শব্দ যুক্ত করে verb গঠন করা যায়।
Example:
- fit – be + fit = befit – মানানসই হওয়া
- fool – be + fool= befool – বোকা বানানো
- friend – be + friend = befriend – বন্ধু হওয়া
- head – be + head = behead – শিরচ্ছেদ করা
- late – be + late = belate – দেরী করা
- little – be + little = belittle – ছোট করা
- witch – be + witch = bewitch – মোহিত করা
- devil – be + devil = bedevil – উৎপীড়ন করা
- guile – be + guile = beguile – প্রতরণা করা
- grudge – be + grudge = begrudge – রুষ্ট হওয়া
(b) কিছু noun ও adjective শব্দের পূর্বে prefix হিসাবে ‘en’ শব্দ যুক্ত করে verb গঠন করা যায়।
Example:
- able – en + able = enable – সক্ষম করা
- chant – en + chant = enchant – মোহিত করা
- counter – en + counter = encounter – মোকাবিলা করা
- courage – en + courage = encourage – উৎসাহ দেওয়া
- danger – en + danger = endanger – বিপদাপন্ন করা
- force – en + force = enforce – বল প্রয়োগ করা
- large – en + large = enlarge – বড় করা; প্রসারিত করা
- list – en + list = enlist – তালিকাভূক্ত করা
- joy – en + joy = enjoy – উপভোগ করা
- cage – en + cage = encage – খাচায় আবদ্ধ করা
- rich – en + rich = enrich – সমৃদ্ধ করা
- sure – en + sure = ensure – নিশ্চিত করা
- dear – en + dear = endear – প্রিয় করা; আদরণীয় করা
- circle – en + circle = encircle – বেষ্টন করা
- slave – en + slave = enslave – দাস করা
