What is an Intensifier?

Intensifier এমন একটি শব্দ যা adverb অথবা adverbial phrase হিসেবে বাক্যে ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং যা সাধারনত: তার ঠিক ডানপাশে থাকা adjective, verb অথবা adverb শব্দকে শক্তিশালী বা জড়ালো করে।

তাহলে বুঝা গেল যে, কোন শব্দের Intensifier হিসাবে ব্যবহৃত হওয়ার শর্ত দুটি এবং তা হলো:

• Intensifier যা adverb অথবা adverbial phrase হিসেবে বাক্যে ব্যবহৃত হবে
• সাধারনত: বা প্রায় সকল ক্ষেত্রে intensifier-এর ডান পাশে থাকা adjective, adverb বা verb শব্দকে শক্তিশালী বা আরো জড়ালো করে বর্ণনা করবে।

Example:

• This mango is tasty. – এই আম সুস্বাদু। (There is no intensifier in this sentence). কিন্তু আমরা যখন লিখবো: This mango is very tasty. – এই আম খুবই সুস্বাদু। তখন very শব্দটি তার ডান পাশে থাকা tasty শব্দটিকে জড়ালো করছে, তাই এ বাক্যে very শব্দটি এই বাক্যে একটি Intensifier.
• The answer of this question is easy. – এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর সহজ। (There is no intensifier in this sentence). কিন্তু আমরা যখন লিখবো: The answer of this question is really easy. – এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর সত্যিই সহজ। তখন really শব্দটি তার ডান পাশে থাকা easy শব্দটিকে জড়ালো করছে, তাই এ বাক্যে really শব্দটি এই বাক্যে একটি Intensifier.

কোন একজন ব্যক্তি একটি বাড়ী দেখে বলতে পারে: That house is beautiful. – বাড়িটা সুন্দর।

ঐ একই ব্যক্তি একটি intensifier ব্যবহার করে বাড়ীটিকে সুন্দর বলাকে আরও শক্তিশালী বা জড়ালো করে বলতে পারে, যেমন: That house is so beautiful. – বাড়িটা অনেক সুন্দর।

ব্যতিক্রম: আমরা অনেক সময় enough-কে intensifier হিসাবে ব্যবহার করি, কিন্তু enough শব্দটি adjective-এর আগে না বসে adjective-এর পরে বসে বা ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

• He is old enough to use the mobile phone.
• The load is big enough for me to carry.

বাক্যে কেন intensifier ব্যবহৃত হয়?

Intensifier মূলত: একটি adverb. অন্যান্য adverb বাক্যে যেমনভাবে কাজ করে ঠিক তেমনিভাবেই একটি intensifier বাক্যের কোন adjective, verb বা adverb-কে প্রয়োজনে আরও বিশদভাবে বর্ণনা করে, আর বিষদভাবে বলার বা বর্ণনা করার জন্যই বাক্যে intensifier ব্যবহৃত হয়।

বাক্যে intensifier কোথায় ব্যবহৃত হয়?

Intensifier সাধারনত: তার ঠিক ডানপাশে থাকা adjective, verb অথবা adverb শব্দকে শক্তিশালী বা জড়ালো করে বর্ণনা করে।

SOME POPULAR INTENSIFIERS

• absolutely
  I have absolutely no desire to go to the party. – পার্টিতে যাওয়ার ইচ্ছা আমার একেবারেই নেই।
• completely
  Don’t worry about that, it’ll be completely okay when he will come. – এটা নিয়ে চিন্তা করো না, এটা পুরোপুরি ঠিক হয়ে যাবে যখন সে আসবে।
• extremely
  I am extremely happy that you have come. – আমি অত্যন্ত খুশি যে আপনি এসেছেন।
• really
  This novel is really interesting. – এই উপন্যাস সত্যিই আনন্দদায়ক।
• super
  This tea is super hot. – এই চা অতি গরম।
• very
  She is a very pretty girl. – সে খুব সুন্দরী মেয়ে। He was a very ‍intelligent student.. – সে খুব মেধাবী ছাত্র ছিলো।
• totally
  His description was totally false. – তার বর্ণনা ছিল সম্পূর্ণ মিথ্যা।
• too
  He was too weak to go out. – সে এতো দূর্বল ছিলো যে সে বাহিরে যেতে পারে নাই।
• so
  My teacher was so kind to me. – আমার শিক্ষক আমার প্রতি খুব সদয় ছিলেন। He felt so upset when he failed the examination. – সে খুব ভেঙ্গে পড়লো যখন সে পরীক্ষায় ফেল করলো।

Some more intensifiers used in everyday English are:

• amazingly
  Look at that sunset. That looks amazingly beautiful. – সেই সূর্যাস্তের দিকে তাকাও। সেটা আশ্চর্যজনক সুন্দর দেখাচ্ছে।
• especially
  I am happy for your being especially kind to me today. – আজকে তুমি আমার প্রতি বিশেষভাবে সদয় হওয়ায় আমি খুশি।
• extraordinarily
  That is an extraordinarily wonderful success story! – এটি একটি অসাধারণ বিস্ময়কর সাফল্যের গল্প!
• incredibly
  My friends were incredibly happy when they saw me at the park. – আমার বন্ধুরা যখন আমাকে পার্কে দেখেছিল তখন তারা অবিশ্বাস্যভাবে খুশি হয়েছিল।
  That is a phenomenally tall building. – এটি একটি অসাধারণ লম্বা ভবন।
• rather
  The teachings were rather important for our life. – শিক্ষা আমাদের জীবনের জন্য বেশ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ছিল।
• remarkably
  That comment was remarkably strong for him. – এই মন্তব্যটি তার জন্য উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে শক্তিশালী ছিল।
• terribly
  It’s terribly hot today. – আজ ভীষণ গরম।
• unusually
  It’s unusually cold for December. – ডিসেম্বরের জন্য এটি অস্বাভাবিকভাবে ঠান্ডা।
• utterly
  He felt utterly helpless while he was sick. – অসুস্থ অবস্থায় তিনি একেবারে অসহায় বোধ করেছিলেন।
• fairly
  It is fairly easy to solve. – এটি সমাধান করা মোটামুটি সহজ।
• quite
  He is quite ignorant about what happened yesterday. – গতকালের ঘটনা সম্পর্কে সে একেবারেই অজ্ঞ।
• awfully
  The scenery is awfully beautiful. – দৃশ্যটা খুবই সুন্দর।
• horribly
  His behavior is horribly dangerous. – তার আচরণ খুবই বিপজ্জনক।

Some other examples of intensifiers

• I strongly disagree with your proposal. – আমি তোমার প্রস্তাবের সাথে দৃঢ়ভাবে দ্বীমত পোষন করি।
• It’s extremely hot in Rajshahi during summer. – গ্রীষ্মকালে রাজশাহীতে প্রচণ্ড গরম থাকে।
• You play cricket very well. – তুমি খুব ভালো ক্রিকেট খেলো।
• Do they really mean the same thing? – তারা কি সত্যিই একই জিনিস বুঝাচ্ছে?
• It’s fairly interesting and fascinating. – এটা মোটামুটি আকর্ষণীয় এবং মনোমুগ্ধকর।
• It’s quite noisy here. – এখানে বেশ কোলাহল।
• This watch is pretty expensive. – এই ঘড়িটি বেশ দামি।
• These students are ‍so happy with their tests. – এই শিক্ষার্থীরা তাদের পরীক্ষা নিয়ে খুব খুশি।
• It’s absolutely fascinating. – এটা একেবারে মনোমুগ্ধকর।
• I am a little angry with her for her misconduct. – আমি তার অসদাচরণের জন্য তার উপর একটু রাগান্বিত।
• I really admire the players of this cricket team. – আমি সত্যিই এই ক্রিকেট দলের খেলোয়াড়দের প্রশংসা করি।
• Faruk simply likes singing. – ফারুক শুধু গান গাইতে পছন্দ করেন
• I’ll certainly go to Dhaka tomorrow. – কাল অবশ্যই ঢাকা যাব।
• His improvement in English is absolutely amazing. – ইংরেজিতে তার উন্নতি একেবারেই আশ্চর্যজনক।
• He heartily wished his all friends a happy new year. – তিনি তার সকল বন্ধুদেরকে আন্তরিকভাবে নতুন বছরের শুভেচ্ছা জানিয়েছেন।
• I so much desire to make my life successful and happy. – আমি আমার জীবনকে সফল এবং সুখী করার জন্য অনেক ইচ্ছা করি।

Often many intensifiers mean the same thing:

• Mr. Rahim is very strong.
• Mr. Rahim is so strong.
• Mr. Rahim is really strong.
• Mr. Rahim is remarkably strong.
• Mr. Rahim is incredibly strong.
• Mr. Rahim is amazingly strong.
• Mr. Rahim is unusually strong.
• Mr. Rahim is extremely strong.
• Mr. Rahim is exceptionally strong.

এই সকল বাক্যে intensifier-এর ব্যবহার ভিন্ন হলেও এগুলি মূলত: একই অর্থ প্রকাশ করছে।

Comparatives এবং superlatives-এর সাথে intensifier-এর ব্যবহার:

সাধারনত: comparatives এবং superlatives অর্থাৎ তুলনামূলক adjective গুলির সাথে এই শব্দ বা শব্দসমূহ intensifier হিসাবে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

• much
• far
• by far
• a lot bigger

Example:

• Rafiq is much older than Faruk. – রফিক ফারুকের চেয়ে বয়সে অনেক বড়।
• Delhi is a lot bigger than Dhaka. – ঢাকার চেয়ে দিল্লি অনেক বড়।
• This house is by far the most expensive. – এই বাড়িটি অনেকাংশে সবচেয়ে দামি।

এছাড়া প্রয়োজনে much এবং far-কে intensifier হিসাবে much + comparative + noun-এভাবে ব্যবহার করা যায়।

Example:

• India is a much bigger country than Bangladesh. – বাংলাদেশের চেয়ে ভারত অনেক বড় দেশ।
• Shakib is a far better player than Rafiq. – রফিকের চেয়ে সাকিব অনেক ভালো খেলোয়াড়।

তাছাড়া প্রয়োজনে by far-কে intensifier হিসাবে by far + the + superlative-এভাবে ব্যবহার করা যায়।

Example:

• This watch is by far the most expensive.
• Rahim is by far the most intelligent student in the class.
• Exercise is by far the most popular activity.
• Dhaka is by far the largest city in our country.
• Australia is by far the best cricket team in the world.
