বাংলাতে অনেক শব্দের idiomatic ব্যবহার রয়েছে। বাক্যে একই শব্দ ব্যবহার করে বিভিন্ন সময় বিভিন্ন অর্থ বুঝানো হয়ে থাকে। এমন ধরণের কিছু noun, adjective ও verb শব্দ নিয়ে গঠিত বাংলা বাক্যকে ইংরেজি বাক্যে পরিণত করা সম্পর্কে আজকের লিখা Idiomatic uses some of Bengali words.

কথা

• তার সাথে আমার কথা চলে না – I am not on speaking terms with him.
• আমার যে কথা সেই কাজ – I am a man of word.
• আমার সেখানে যাবার কথা ছিলো – I was supposed to go there. Or: I was to go there.
• আমি তার মুখের উপর বেশ দু’কথা শুনিয়ে দিয়েছি – I have given him a bit of my mind roundly to his face.
• এ বেশ ভাল কথা – That’s a good idea.
• আমার কথা শোন – Listen to me.
• ও কথা ছেড়ে দাও – Let the matter drop.
• আজ জীবনের শেষে কতো কথাই মনে পড়ছে – So many words are coming in my mind at the end of my life today.
• তার সাথে সাক্ষাতের সময় সে কথা তোলা হয় নাই কেন? – Why didn’t you raise that point up when you met him?
• ভাল কথা, তোমার একখানা বই আমার কাছে আছে – Well, I have a book of yours.
• আমি কাল যাবো বলে তাকে কথা দিয়েছি – I have given him word to go tomorrow.
• শুনা কথা বিশ্বাস করো না – Do not believe in hearsay.
• সে অনেক কথা – That is a long story.
• তিনি মোটেই আমার কথা কানে তুললেন না – He turned a deaf ear to my words.

কাজ

• কাজের লোক চুপ করে বসে থাকতে পারে না – A man of action cannot sit idle.
• সে বোকার মত কাজ করেছে – He has played the fool.
• ছেলেটি কোন কাজের নয় – The boy is good for nothing.
• এই বইয়ে আমার কাজ হবে না – This book will not serve my purpose.
• তোমার সাহায্যে আমার কাজ নাই – I do not require your help.
• কাজের জিনিস সাবধানে রাখতে হয় – Useful things should be preserved with care.
• আমাকে কোথাও একটা কাজ খুঁজে দিতে পারেন কি? – Could you please get me a job anywhere?
• বাজে কাজে সময় নষ্ট করো না – Do not waste time in useless things.
• এটা কোন কাজের কথা নয় – It is not at all an important matter.
• যন্ত্রটা এখন অকেজো – The machine is now out of order.

মাথা

• মি: রহিম একজন মাথাওয়ালা লোক – Mr. Rahim is an intelligent man.
• আমার অংকে মাথা নাই – I have no head for mathematics.
• এই মানুষটি এই গ্রামের মাথা – This man is the head of this village.
• আমি তোমার কথার আগা মাথা কিছুই বুঝতে পারলাম না – I could not make head or tail of what you say.
• তুমি মাথা আাঁচরিয়েছো কি? – Have you combed your hair?
• সে তোমার মাথায় হাত ‍বুলিয়ে কার্য সিদ্ধি করেছে – He achieved his end by playing ticks on you.
• তোমার অপমানে আমার মাথা কাটা গিয়েছে – The insult to you has made me extremely ashamed.
• তুমি বেশী আদর দিয়ে ছেলেটির মাথা খেয়েছো? – You have spoilt the child by too much indulgence.
• আমার মাথা ঘুরছে – I feel giddy.
• লোকটি যেন একটু মাথামোটা – The man is rather idiotic.
• মাথা পাগলা লোক দিয়ে কাজ চলে না – A crazy man is of no use.
• তোমার মাথা খারাপ হয়েছে – You are off your head.

চোখ

• আমার চোখের সামনে এই দূর্ঘটনা ঘটেছে – The accident took place before my eyes.
• আমার ল্যাপটপের উপর ভাইজানের চোখ পড়েছে – My laptop has caught my elder brother’s fancy.
• দুরন্ত ছেলেকে সবসময় চোখে চোখে রাখতে হয় – A naughty boy should always be kept under close observation.
• তুমি কি চোখের মাথা খেয়েছো? – Have you lost your eyes? Or: Are you blind?
• মেয়েটি চোখে-মুখে কথা বলে – The girl talks garrulously.
• তুমি আমার চোখ ধূলা দিয়ে পালাতে পারবে না – You will not be able to escape by throwing dust in my eyes.
• আমার উন্নতি দেখে তার চোখ টাটায় – He is envious of my prosperity.

মুখ

• তুমি আমার মুখ রক্ষা করেছো – You have saved me from dishonour.
• তুমি এতো মুখচোরা কেন? – Why are you so shy?
• তারা মুখোমুখি দাঁড়ালো – They stood face to face.
• সেই সভায় আমিই প্রথম মুুখ খুলিলাম – I was the first to open my mouth at that meeting.
• তুমি আমায় মুখ ভ্যাংচাচ্ছো কেন? – Why do you make faces at me?
• এমন করে মুখ ভার করে আছো কেনো? – Why are you in such a sulky mood?
• তোমার মুখ খুব খারাপ – You are a very foul-mouthed person.
• আমারা ভবিষতের মুখে চেয়ে আছি – We are looking forward to the future.
• মুখ সামলিয়ে কথা বলো – Hold your tongue.
• অমন কথা মুখে আনাও পাপ – Even to utter such a thing is a sin.
• তার মুখের উপর এমন কথা বলার সাহস করলে কি করে? – How did you dare say this to his face?
• তার কাছে টাকা চাওয়ার আমার মুখ নাই – I do not have face to ask for money from him.
• আমার  দূর্দশা দেখে তারা মুখ টিপে হাসলো – They laughed in their sleeves at my misfortune.
• বন্ধুর বিপদে তোমার মুখ ফিরানো উচিত নয় – You should not turn away your face in your friend’s difficulty.

হাত

• আমার হাতে এখন টাকা নাই – I have no money on me now.
• ডাক্তার রোগ  নির্ণেয়ের জন্য রোগীর হাত দেখলেন – The doctor felt the pulse of the patient for diagnosing the disease.
• তার হাতের লিখা ভালো – His handwriting is good.
• কয়েদীকে হাতকড়া পড়ানো হয়েছিলো – The prisoner was handcuffed.
• এ ব্যাপারে আমার কোন হাত নাই – I have no hand in the matter.
• তাকে হাত করে কাজটি করে নিলাম – I had my job done by managing him.
• তার হাতে এখন অনেক কাজ – He hands are now full. Or: He has a lot of work to do now.
• দেয়ালটি পাঁচ হাত উচু – The wall is five cubits high.
• তার গায়ে একটি হাতকাটা জামা ছিলো – He wore a sleeveless shirt.
• হাত চালাও – Hurry up.
• অস্ত্র চিকিৎসায় ডাক্তার রফিকের বেশ হাতযশ ছিলো – Dr. Rafik had a name and fame in surgery.

অল্প

• আমাকে অল্প একটু দুধ দাও – Give me a little milk.
• তার আয় খুব অল্প – He is a man of meagre income.
• অল্প মূল্যে বাড়ীটি বিক্রয় হয়ে গেলো – The house was sold at a low price.
• আমি অল্পকাল সেখানে ছিলাম – I was there for a short time.
• তুলনামূলকভাবে আমাদের দেশের লোকদের আয়ু অল্প – The life expectancy of the people of our country is relatively short.
• অল্প বয়স্ক বালকদের সেখানে যাওযা উচিত নয় – Boys of tender age should not go there.
• অল্প বিদ্যা ভয়ঙ্করী – A little learning is a dangerous thing.
• আমার রোজ অল্প অল্প জ্বর হচ্ছে – I have a slight fever every day.

কাঁচা

• সে অংকে খুব কাঁচা – He is very weak in Mathematics.
• আদিম মানুষ কাঁচা মাংশ খেতো – Primitive people used to eat raw meat.
• শ্রমিকেরা কারখানার কাছে কাঁচা ঘড়ে থাকে – Workers live in a mud-huts near the factory.
• ষাট বছরেও তার চুল কাঁচা ছিলো – His hair was black even when he was sixty.
• সে কাঁচা আম ভালবাসে – He likes green mangoes.
• এই কাজে তুমি এখনো কাঁচা – You are still novice in this work.
• সে কাঁচা মাংশও হজম করতে পারে – He can even digest raw meat.
• কাঁচা ফল টক – A green fruit is sour.
• শিশুটিকে কাঁচা দুধ দিও না – Do not give the child unboiled milk
• কাঁচা রাস্তা দিয়ে যাও – Walk along the unmetalled road.

পাকা

• পাকা আম খেতে মিষ্টি – A ripe mango is sweet to eat.
• শহরে তার একটি পাকা বাড়ী আছে – He has a brick-built house in the town.
• এই কাপড়ের রং পাকা – The color of this fabric is fast.
• তার হাতের লেখা পাকা – His handwriting is mature.
• লোকটা একটা পাকা মাতাল – The man is a inveterate drunkard.
• সে একজন পাকা মিথ্যাবাদী – He is a confirmed liar.
• ছেলেটি অংকে পাকা – The boy is strong in Mathematics.
• এই গ্রামের মধ্য দিয়ে একটি পাকা রাস্তা গেছে – A paved road runs through the village.
• পাকা সোনার গহনা হয় না – Ornaments cannot be made from pure gold.
• আমি অফিসের জন্য একজন পাকা অফিস সহকারী চাই – I want an expert office assistant for the office.
• এই টেবিলটি পাকা কাঠের তৈরী – This table is made of seasoned wood.
• এই আমটি পাকা – This mango is ripe.
• আমাদের গ্রামে কোন পাকা রাস্তা নাই – There is no paved road in our village.
• এটি কি পাকা সোনা? – Is it pure gold?
• পাকা বন্দোবস্ত করে ফেলো – Make final arrangement.

মোটা

• তিনি মোটা মাহিনা পান – He draws a handsome salary.
• আমি মোটা কাপড় ব্যবহার করি – I use coarse cloth.
• তার বুদ্ধি মোটা – His intellect is thick.
• তুমি বেশ মোটা হয়েছো – You have gained flesh / weight.
• মোটা ভাত মোটা কাপড় পাইলেই আমরা সন্তোষ্ট – We are satisfied with a modest income.
• মোটা দরি দিয়া গরুটি বাঁধ – Get the cow tied with thick rope.

উঠা

• সে রেগে উঠলো – He flew into a rage.
• কাপড়ের এ রং উঠে যাবে – The colour of this cloth will fade.
• এ আইনটি উঠে গেছে – This law has been abolished.
• তার চুল উঠে যাচ্ছে – His hair is falling off.
• দোকানটি উঠে গেছে – The shop has been closed.
• বাচ্চাটির দাঁত উঠিতেছে – The baby’s teeth are erupting.
• সে সকাল ছয় টায় উঠবে – He will get up at six in the morning.
• সকালে উঠা স্বাস্থ্যের পক্ষে ভালো – Early rising is good for health.
• তুমি গাছে উঠতে পার কি? – Can you climb a tree?
• আমি এবার দশম শ্রেনিতে উঠলাম – I have been promoted to Class ten this year.

কাটা

• তুমি আমাকে চিমটি কাটছো কেন? – Why do you pinch me?
• অপমানে আমার মাথা কাটা গেলো – I hung down my head in dishonour.
• কথা কাটাকাটি করে লাভ কি? – What is the benefit of arguing?
• ছেলেরা পুকুরে সাঁতার কাটছে – The boys are swimming in the pond.
• আমার পেন্সিলটি কেটে দাও – Sharpen my pencil.
• তুমি চুল কাট না কেন? – Why don’t you crop your hair?
• কৃষকরা শস্য কাটছে – The farmers are reaping corn.
• লজ্জায় সে জিভ কাটলো – He bit his tongue in shame.
• বইটি ভালই কাটছে – The book is selling well.

রাখা

• এ সকল প্রশ্ন রাখ – Leave these questions aside.
• এই কাজটির উপর চোখ রেখো – Keep an eye on this work.
• তুমি দাড়ি রাখ না কেন? – Why don’t you wear a beard?
• তোমার কথা রাখতে পারছি না বলে দু:খিত – I am sorry that I cannot comply with your request.
• তাকে উৎকন্ঠায় রেখো না – Don’t keep him in suspense.
• পেয়ালাটি টেবিলের উপর রাখো – Put the cup on the table.
• কোন কাজ কাল করবো বলে ফেলে রেখো না – Don’t leave any work to be done tomorrow.
• আয় হতে দু’পয়সা রাখার চেষ্টা করো – Try to save something from your income.
• মনে রাখিও, চালাকি দ্বারা কোন ভাল কাজ সম্পন্ন হয় না – Remember, no great thing can be achieved through trick.

Miscellaneous idiomatic expressions

সবশেষে idiomatic expressions সম্বলিত কয়েকটি বাংলা বাক্যের ইংরেজি কি হয়, তা জানবো। বাক্যগুলিকে আমরা আমাদের কথাবার্তায় প্রায়শ:ই ব্যবহার করে থাকি।

• তিনি একজন চৌকশ লোক – He is a square man.
• তুমি একাই একশ – You are a host in yourself.
• ছেলেটা বড় ঠ্যাটা – The boy is a big jerk.
• তোমার বন্ধু একটা ছেচড়া – Your friend is a blackguard.
• রফিকের ভাইটা একেবারে গোল্লায় গিয়েছে – Rafiq’s brother has gone to the dogs. Or: Rafiq’s brother has gone to hell
• সে একজন ভন্ড তপস্বী – He is a fake ascetic.
• সকলেই তাকে ছি: ছি: করতে লাগলো – Everybody began to cry shame on him.
• এবার সে আমাকে বাগে পেয়েছে – This time he has caught me on the hip.
• তিনি মেজাজ ঠিক রাখতে পারলেন না – He lost his temper. Or: He could not keep his temper under his control.
• তুমি তো সব কাজেই জগা খিচুরী পাকাও – You make a mess of everything.
• এই গাঁজাখুরি (আষাঢ়ে) গল্প কেউ বিশ্বাস করবে না – Nobody will believe this cock and bull story.
• সে ধনীর ঘড়ে জন্মে ছিলো – He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Or: He was born in a rich family.
• সে নিজের গুনগান নিজেই করে – He blows his own trumpet.
• আমি তাকে প্রানপনে বাধা দিয়েছিলাম – I opposed him tooth and nail.
• দেনায় আমার মাথা বিকাইয়া গিয়েছে – I am over head and ears in debt.
• দুই ভাইয়ের মধ্যে অহি-নকুল সম্পর্ক – The two brothers are at dagger’s drawn with each other.
• তার অকালে মৃত্যু হয়েছে – He died prematurely. Or: His life was cut short.
• গতকাল তুমি আমাকে গালাগালি করেছিলে – You scolded me yesterday.
