বাংলা থেকে ইংরেজি করার ক্ষেত্রে Collective nouns and articles বিষয়ে জানা খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। তাই এ অধ্যায়ে আমরা Collective noun এবং article-এর বিষয়টি বুঝে বাংলা থেকে ইংরেজি করার চেষ্টা করবো।

Rule:

Collective noun যখন অনিদির্ষ্ট অর্থে singular number-এ ব্যবহৃত হয়, তখন তার পূর্বে article হিসাবে a অথবা an বসে। কিন্তু অনিদির্ষ্ট অর্থে plural number-এ ব্যবহৃত হলে তার পূর্বে কোন article বসে না।

কিন্তু সুনিদির্ষ্ট অর্থে plural number-এ ব্যবহৃত collective noun-এর পূর্বে article হিসাবে the ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

• ঝাঁকে ঝাঁকে মৌমাছি উড়িয়া গেল – The bees flew away in droves.
• পাখির ঝাঁকগুলি উড়িতেছে – The flocks of birds are flying.
• একপাল গরু মাঠে চড়িতেছে – A herd of cows is grazing in the field.
• এক ঝাঁক পাখি উড়িতেছে – A flock of birds is flying.
• রাখাল বালকটি এক পাল গরু নিয়ে মাঠে যাচ্ছে – The shepherd boy is going to the field with a herd of cows.
• এই গ্রামের যুব সম্প্রদায় একটি পাঠাগার স্থাপন করেছে – The youth community of this village has set up a library.
• The town council has approved plans to create a new park – টাউন কমিটি একটি নতুন পার্ক তৈরির পরিকল্পনা অনুমোদন করেছে।
• The committee agrees to the decision – কমিটি সিদ্ধান্তে সম্মত হয়।
• A bunch of flowers is lying on the table – একগুচ্ছ ফুল টেবিলে পরে আছে –
• A flock of birds was flying in the sky – পাখির ঝাঁক আকাশে উড়ছিল।
• A band of musicians was performing in the hall – একদল সংগীতশিল্পী হলটিতে পারফর্ম করছিলেন।
• A team of 11 players was traveling to the stadium – এগারো জন খেলোয়াড়ের একটি দল স্টেডিয়ামে যাচ্ছিল।
• A stack of wood was lying in the storeroom of his house – তার বাড়ির স্টোররুমে কাঠের স্তুপ পড়ে ছিল।
• A group of engineers is busy designing a bridge – একদল প্রকৌশলী একটি ব্রিজ ডিজাইনে ব্যস্ত।
• এক পাল শিকারী কুকুর হরিণের পিছে দৌরাচ্ছে – A herd of hunting dogs is running after deer.

Rule:

Collective noun দ্বারা যদি সমষ্টি না বুঝিয়ে যদি সমষ্টির অন্তর্গত ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে পৃথক করে বুঝায়, তখন তাকে noun of multitude বলে এবং তা plural number-এ ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

• কমিটি দশজন সদস্য নিয়ে গঠিত – The committee consists of ten members. (Collective noun).
• কমিটিতে মতভেদ দেখা দিলো – The committee were divided in their opinions. (Noun of multitude).
• একদল বানর গাছের উপর বসিয়া আছে – A group of monkeys are sitting on a tree.
• সংখ্যা গরিষ্ঠ অংশ আমাকে সমর্থন করে – The majority of numbers support me.
• জনগন খাদ্যা দাবী করছে – People are demanding food.
