The past simple tense

Rule:

বাংলা ক্রিয়ার শেষে লাম, ল, লে, লেন থাকলে past simple tense বা past indefinite tense হয়।

Example:

• আমরা গত বছর জাতীয় যাদুঘর দেখতে গিয়েছিলাম – We went to see the National Museum last year. We visited the National Museum last year.
• রহিম ও ফারুক গত ক্লাসে অনুপস্থিত ছিলো – Rahim and Farooq were absent in the last class.
• প্রচীনকালে মানুষ অসহায় ছিলো – In ancient times people were helpless.
• সে সেখানে যাবার জন্য প্রস্তুত ছিলো না – He was not ready to go there.
• পথে এক বন্ধুর সাথে দেখা হলো – I met a friend on the way.
• আমার পিতামহ আশি বছর বেঁচেছিলেন – My grandfather lived up to the age of eighty years.
• রহিমা এতো সরল-সোজা ছিল যে সে বিষয়টি বুঝতে পারেনি – Rahima was so straight forward that she didn’t understand.
• আমার পিতা ডাক্তার ছিলেন – My father was a doctor.
• তিনি পঞ্চাশ টাকায় পাঁচটি ডিম কিনেছিলেন – He bought five eggs for taka fifty.
• আমি কি তোমার বন্ধু ছিলাম না? – Was not I your friend to you?
• মুক্তিযুদ্বের আগে বাংলাদেশ পাকিস্থানের অংশ ছিলো – Before the war of liberation, Bangladesh was a part of Pakistan.
• তারা চাঁদনী রাতে বেড়াতে বেড় হয়েছিল – They went out for a walk on a moonlit night.
• রহিম দ্রুত ষ্টেশনের দিকে হাঁটিতে লাগিলো – Rahim began to walk fast towards the station.
• দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ ১৯৪৫ সালে শেষ হয়েছিল – World War II ended in 1945.
• শেক্সপিয়ার বিখ্যাত নাট্যকার ছিলেন – Shakespeare was a famous dramatist.
• ড: মুহম্মদ শহীদুল্লাহ একজন খ্যাতিমান ভাষাবিদ ছিলেন – Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah was a renowned linguist.
• ঢাকা এক সময় মসলিন কাপড়ের জন্য বিখ্যাত ছিলো – Once Dhaka was famous for its muslin cloth.
• তিনি তোমাকে নানাভাবে সাহায্য করেছিলেন – He helped you in various ways.
• তুমি গতরাতে কোথায় ছিলে? – Where were you last night?
• তার কোন মোবাইল ফোন ছিল না – He had no mobile phone. / He did not have a mobile phone.
• সে কয়টার সময় বাড়ী ফিরেছিলো? – What time did he return home?
• আমরা কখনো কখনো ষ্টেডিয়ামে খেলা দেখতে যেতাম – We would sometimes go to the stadium to watch the game.
• আমাদের গ্রামে অনেক বড় একটা বটগাছ ছিল – There was a very big banyan tree in our village.
• গতকাল রাতে আকাশে সে কোন তারা দেখে নাই – He didn’t see any stars in the sky last night.
• তুমি কি তাকে ভোট দাওনি? – Didn’t you vote for him?

Rule:

অতীতকালে অভ্যাস বুঝাতে বা অতীতে কোন কাজ নিয়মিত হতো বুঝাতে ’used to’ বা ’would’ ব্যবহৃত হয়। এসকল বাক্যে বাংলা ক্রিয়ার শেষে তাম, ত, তে কিম্বা তেন ইত্যাদি থাকলে past indefinite tense হয়।

Example:

• রফিক সাহেব ঘন্টার পর ঘন্টা বক্তৃতা দিতেন – Mr. Rafiq used to give speeches for hours.
• তিনি ধুমপান করতেন – He used to smoke.
• আব্বা প্রত্যহ কোরান পড়তেন – Father used to read the Quran every day.
• ঢাকায় থাকতে সে ভোর পাঁচটায় ঘুম থেকে উঠতো – While in Dhaka, he would wake up at five in the morning.
• আমরা প্রতিদিন নদীতে গোসল করতাম ও সাতার কাটতাম – We used to bath and swim in the river every day.
• আমরা কখনো কখনো ষ্টেডিয়ামে খেলা দেখতে যেতাম – We would sometimes go to the stadium to watch the game.
• হাফিজ প্রত্যহ এখানে আসতো – Hafiz used to come here every day.
• আমরা যখন ঢাকায় ছিলাম তখন রমনা পার্কে বেড়াতাম – When we were in Dhaka, we used to visit Ramna Park.

Rule:

অতীতকালে কোন একটি কাজ করার সময় অন্য কোন চলমান কাজ করতে করতে যেমন, হাসতে হাসতে, কাঁদতে কাঁদতে, নাচতে নাচতে, গান গাইতে গাইতে ইত্যাদি প্রকাশ করতে চাইলে past indefinite tense হয়। চলমান কাজটি প্রকাশ করার জন্য বাক্যের শেষে চলমান কাজটির verb-ing ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

• সে পড়তে পড়তে ঘুমিয়ে পড়লো – He fell asleep while reading.
• সে গান গাইতে গাইতে মাঠের দিকে গেলো – He went to the field singing.
• শিশুটি কাঁদতে কাঁদতে মায়ের কাছে গেলো – The baby went to its mother crying.

Past continuous tense

Rule:

যে সব ক্রিয়ার শেষে ইতেছিলাম, ইতেছিলে, ইতেছিল, ইতেছিলেন, ছি, ছো, ছেন প্রভৃতি থাকলে past continuous tense হয়।

Example:

• তুমি তখন কি করছিলে (করিতেছিলে)? – What were you doing at that time?
• মতিন স্কুলের দিকে যাচ্ছিলো (যাইতেছিল) – Matin was going towards school.
• আমরা খেলা করছিলাম (করিতেছিলাম) – We were playing.
• ছেলেগুলো রৌদ্রে দৌড়াচ্ছিল – The boys were running in the sun.
• তুমি কি চিঠি লিখছিলে? – Were you writing a letter?
• তখন তারা গান গাচ্ছিল – They were singing at that time.
• তখন তিনি ঢাকা কলেজে অধ্যাপনা করছিলেন – At that time he was teaching in Dhaka College.
• ছাত্ররা ক্লাসে গোলমাল করছিল – The students were making noise in class.
• বিকেলে সে তার বাচ্চাকে হাটাচ্ছিল – In the afternoon she was walking her baby.
• আমরা তখন কষ্টে দিন কাটাচ্ছিলাম – Then we were having a hard time.
• রাতে কুকুরটি ঘেউ ঘেউ করছিল – The dog was barking at night.
• বাহিরে তখন অন্ধকার হয়ে আসছিল – It was getting dark outside.
• আমার মাথা তখন কাজ করছিল না – My head was not working then.
• রহিম কি ফোনে কথা বলছিল? – Was Rahim talking on the phone?
• তারা সেখানে কি করছিল? – What were they doing there?
• মেয়েটা তখন কেন কাদিতেছিল? – Why was the girl crying then?
• তারা কি বৃষ্টির মধ্যে ফুটবল খেলছিলো? – Were they playing football in the rain?
• রহিম ও ফারুক এক সাথে খেলছিলো – Rahim and Faruk were playing together.

Rule:

অতীতকালে দুটি কাজ একইসাথে চলছিল বুঝালে দুটি কাজের দুটি verb-এর tense হবে past continuous tense.

Example:

• তারা যখন ঝগড়া করছিল তখন আমরা মাঠে খেলা করছিলাম – We were playing on the field when they were arguing.
• সে যখন বই পড়ছিলো তখন আমি চিঠি লিখছিলাম – I was writing a letter when he was reading a book.
• রহিমা জালানাগুলো পরিস্কার করছিল এবং রত্না মেঝে ঝাড়ু দিচ্ছিল – Rahima was cleaning the windows and Ratna was sweeping the floor.
• পুলিশ যখন আসছিল লোকজন তখন পালাচ্ছিল – People were fleeing when the police were coming.
• আমি যখন স্কুলে যাচ্ছিলাম বাবা তখন বাড়ী ফিরছিলেন – When I was going to school my father was returning home.
• মেয়েটি শস্য কাটছিল ও গান গাচ্ছিলো – The girl was cutting grain and singing.

Rule:

অতীতে একটা কাজ চলমান অবস্থায় থাকাকালে অন্য একটি কাজ সংঘটিত হলে, চলমান কাজটি হবে past continuous tense-এ এবং অপর কাজটি হবে past indefinite tense-এ।

Example:

• সে যখন আসে আমি তখন পড়ছিলাম – I was reading when he came.
• আমি যখন আসলাম তখন সে ভাত খাচ্ছিলো – He was eating rice when I came.
• যখন সে ঘুম থেকে জাগলো তখন বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিল – It was raining when he woke up.
• সে যখন বাগানে হাঁটছিল তখন একটা সাপ তাকে কামড় দিলো – He was walking in the garden when a snake bit him.
• যখন সে এসেছিল তখন কি তুমি ঘুমাচ্ছিলে? – Were you sleeping when he came?
• সে যখন গান গাইছিলো তখন আমরা চুপ করে ছিলাম – We were silent when he was singing.

past perfect tense

Rule:

অতীতকালে দুটি কাজ হলে যে কাজটি আগে হয়, সেই কাজটি বর্ণনা করার জন্য past perfect tense ব্যবহৃত হয়। অপর কাজটি past indefinite tense-এ হয়।

Example:

• সে ষ্টেশনে পৌছার পূর্বে ট্রেনটি ছেড়ে দিলো – The train had left before he reached the station.
• ডাক্তার আসিবার পূর্বে সে মারা গেলো – He had died before the doctor came.
• ট্রেন স্টেশনে আসার পূর্বেই আমরা সেখানে পৌছেছিলাম – We had reached the station before the train arrived.
• আমরা কলেজে পৌছার পর সে আসলো – He came after we had reached the college.
• সে আমাকে বললো যে সে কাজটি করেছিলো – He told me he had done the work.
• বিয়ে করার পূর্বে সে তার লেখাপড়া শেষ করেছিলো – He had completed his education before he married.
• আমার আসার পূর্বেই তিনি চলে গিয়েছিলেন – He had left before I arrived.

Rule:

একটি কাজ হতে না হতেই আরেকটি কাজ শুরু হওয়া বুঝালে No sooner ………….than দ্বারা বাক্য আরম্ভ হয় ও শেষ হয় past indefinite tense দ্বারা।

গঠন প্রনালী: No sooner + had + subject + than + past indefinite.

Example:

• বাড়ী থেকে বের হতে না হতেই সেটা ভেঙ্গে পড়লো – No sooner had they left the house than it broke down.
• আমি ঘড়টিতে প্রবেশ করতে না করতেই ফোনটা বেজে উঠলো – No sooner had I entered the room than the phone rang.
• আমি স্টেশনে পৌছাবার সাথে সাথে ট্রেনটি ছেড়ে দিলো – No sooner had I reached the station than the train left.
• বৃষ্টি থামতে না থামতেই আমরা বাহিরে গেলাম – No sooner had the rain stopped than we went out.
• সে বাহিরে যেতে না যেতেই ঝড় উঠলো – No sooner had he gone out than the storm blew.
• আমি তাকে ছুঁতে না ছুঁতেই সে কেঁদে ফেললো – No sooner had I touched him than he began to weep.
• শিক্ষক মহোদয় ক্লাসে প্রবেশ করা মাত্র ছাত্ররা উঠে দাড়ালো – No sooner had the teacher entered the classroom than the students stood up.

Note: এ সকল বাক্যকে no sooner-এর পরিবর্তে hardly, barely, scarcely দ্বারাও আরম্ভ করা যায়। এগুলো দ্বারা বাক্য আরম্ভ করলে than-এর পরিবর্তে when ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

• বাড়ী থেকে বের হতে না হতেই সেটা ভেঙ্গে পড়লো – Hardly / barely / scarcely had they left the house than it broke down.
• আমি ঘড়টিতে প্রবেশ করতে না করতেই ফোনটা বেজে উঠলো – Hardly / barely / scarcely had I entered the room than the phone rang.
• আমি স্টেশনে পৌছাবার সাথে সাথে ট্রেনটি ছেড়ে দিলো – Hardly / barely / scarcely had I reached the station than the train left.
• বৃষ্টি থামতে না থামতেই আমরা বাহিরে গেলাম – Hardly / barely / scarcely had the rain stopped than we went out.
• সে বাহিরে যেতে না যেতেই ঝড় উঠলো – Hardly / barely/ scarcely had he gone out than the storm blew.
• আমি তাকে ছুঁতে না ছুঁতেই সে কেঁদে ফেললো – Hardly / barely / scarcely had I touched him than he began to weep.
• শিক্ষক মহোদয় ক্লাসে প্রবেশ করা মাত্র ছাত্ররা উঠে দাড়ালো – Hardly / barely / scarcely had the teacher entered the classroom than the students stood up.

past perfect continuous tense

Rule:

অতীতে কোন একটা কাজ অনেকটা লম্বা সময় ধরে চলছিল বুঝানোর জন্য past perfect continuous tense ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

• গত তিন বছর যাবত সে একই ক্লাসে পড়ছিল – He had been studying in the same class for the last three years.
• সে এক ঘন্টা ধরে কবিতাটি মুখস্ত করছিল – He had been memorizing the poem for an hour.
• রবিবার হতে বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিলো – It has been raining since Sunday.

Rule:

অতীতে কোন একটা কাজের আগে অন্য কোন কাজ অনেক লম্বা সময় ধরে চলছিল বুঝালে, যে কাজটি লম্বা সময় ধরে চলছিল তা বুঝাতে past perfect continuous tense ও অপর কাজটি past indefinite tense-এ লিখতে হয়।

Example:

• শিক্ষক আসিবার পূর্বে সে গল্পের বই পড়ছিলো – He had been reading a story book before the teacher came.
• অবসর গ্রহণের আগে আমার মামা পঁয়ত্রিশ বছর শিক্ষকতা করেছেন – My uncle had been teaching for thirty five years before he retired.
• ঘুমাতে যাবার পূর্বে সে দুই ঘন্টা ধরে পড়ছিলো – He had been reading for two hours before he fell asleep.
