Some common Bengali proverbs-এ আমরা আমাদের কথাবার্তার সময় সাধারনত: যে সকল proverb ব্যবহার করে থাকি, সেগুলি বিষয়ে জানবো। এগুলি শাব্দিক অর্থে বা parts of speech অনুযায়ী হয় না, তাই এগুলিকে মুখস্ত রেখে প্রয়োজনে সিচুয়েশন বুঝে বাক্যে ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

• অতি লোভে তাঁতি নষ্ট – Grasp all, lose all.
• আপন ভালোতো জগৎ ভালো – To the pure all things are pure.
• আকাশ-কুসুম চিন্তা করা -To build castle in the air.
• অতি ভক্তি চোরের লক্ষণ – Too much courtesy, full of craft.
• অনেক সন্যাসীতে গাজন নষ্ট – Too many cooks spoil the broth.
• অসারের তর্জন গর্জনই সার / খালি কলসি বাজে বেশি – Empty vessels sound much.
• আয় বুঝে ব্যয় করিও – Cut your coat according to your cloth.
• অভাবে সভাব নষ্ট – Necessity knows no law.
• অতি চালাকের গলায় দড়ি – Too much cunning overreaches itself.
• আপন চরকায় তেল দাও – Oil your own machine. Or: Mind your own business.
• ইচ্ছা থাকলেই উপায় হয় – Where there is a will, there is a way.
• ইজ্জৎ যায় না ধুলে, স্বভাব যায় না মলে অথবা: কয়লা ধুলে ময়লা যায় না – Black will take no other hue.
• উলু বনে মুক্তা ছড়ানো অথবা: বানরের গলায় মুক্তোর হার – To cast pearls before swine.
• এক ঢিলে দুই পাখি মারা অথবা: রথ দেখা কলা বেচা – To kill two birds with one stone.
• কাঁটা দিয়ে কাঁটা তোলা – To set a thief to catch a thief.
• এক হাতে তালি বাজে না – It takes two to make a quarrel.
• একের সর্বনাশ অপরের পৌষ মাস – Nero fiddles while Rome burns.
• কষ্ট না করলে কেষ্ট মেলে না – No pains, no gains.
• কাটা ঘায়ে নুনের ছিটা দেয়া অথবা: মরার উপর খাড়ার ঘা – To add insult to injury.
• কার শ্রাদ্ধ কে করে, খোলা কেটে বামুন মরে – What is everybody’s business, is nobody’s business.
• গরজ বড় বালাই অথবা: অভাবে স্বভাব নষ্ট – Necessity knows no law.
• অল্প বিদ্যা ভয়ংকরী – A little learning is a dangerous thing.
• অরণ্যে রোদন / বৃথা চেষ্টা – Crying in the wilderness.
• গেঁয়ো যোগী ভিক্ষা পায় না – Familiarity breeds contempt.
• চোর পালালে বুদ্ধি বাড়ে – After death comes the doctor.
• চোরে চোরে মাসতুতো ভাই – Birds of a feather flock together.
• চাচা আপন জান বাঁচা / আপনি বাঁচলে বাপের নাম – Every man is for himself. / Self preservation is the first law of nature.
• চোরের উপর বাটপাড়ি – To rob the robber.
• অহিংসা পরম ধর্ম – Love is the best virtue.
• জলে কুমীর ডাঙ্গায় বাঘ – Between the devil and the deep sea.
• জোর যার মুলুক তার – Might is right.
• ঢিলটি মারলে পাটকেলটি খেতে হয় – Tit for tat.
• ঝোপ বুঝে কোপ মারো – Strike the iron while it is hot. Or: Make hay while the sun shines.
• ঢেঁকি  স্বর্গে গেলেও ধান ভানে – Habit is the second nature.
• ধর্মের কল বাতাসে নড়ে – Virtue proclaims itself.
• অহংকার পতনের মূল – Pride goes before destruction.
• নেই মামার চেয়ে কানা মামা ভাল – Something is better than nothing. Or: Half a loaf is better than no loaf.
• ল্যাাংটার নেই বাটপাড়ের ভয় – A pauper has nothing to lose.
• নাচতে না জানলে উঠান বাঁকা – A bad workman quarrels with his tools.
• পান না তাই খান না – Grapes are sour.
• পাপের ধন প্রায়শ্চিত্তে যায় – Ill got, ill spent.
• বাপকা ব্যাটা – Like father, like son.
•  অর্থই হচ্ছে অনর্থের মূল-Money is the root cause of all unhappiness.
• ভিক্ষার চাল কাঁড়া আর আকাঁড়া – Beggars must not be choosers.
• ভৃতের বেগার খাটা – To work for nothing.
• যেমন কুকুর তেমনি মুগুর – Rightly served.
• সুখে থাকতে ভূতে কিলায় – To feel ill at ease

• কিল খেয়ে কিল চুরি করা – To pocket an insult.
• গাইতে গাইতে গায়েন – Practice makes a perfect.
• ঘরপোড়া গরু সিঁদুরে মেধ দেখলে ডরায় – A burnt child dreads the fire.
• চোরা না শুনে ধর্মের কাহিনী – A rogue is deaf to all good.
• দাঁত থাকতে দাঁতের মর্যাদা বুঝা যায় না – Blessings are not valued till they are gone.
• দুষ্ট গরুর চেয়ে শূন্য গোয়াল ভাল – Better an empty house than a bad tenant.
• ধরি মাছ না ছুঁই পানি – A cat loves fish but is loath to wet her feet.
• আগাছার বাড় বেশি – All weeds grow apace.
• নানা মুনির নানা মত – Many men, many minds.
• বিনা মেঘে বজ্রপাত – A bolt from the blue.
• বজ্র আঁটুনি ফস্কা গিরো – The more laws, the more offenders.
• অন্ধের কিবা রাত্রি কিবা দিন – Day and night are alike to a blind man.
• যেমন কর্ম তেমন ফল – As you sow, so you reap.
• অপ্রিয় সত্য কথা বলতে নেই – Do not speak an unpleasant truth.
• যেখানে বাঘের ভয় সেখানেই রাত হয় – Dangers often come where danger is feared.
• সস্তার তিন অবস্থা – Cheap goods are dear in the long run.
• সবুরে মেওয়া ফলে – Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.
•  অপচয়ে অভাব ঘটে -Waste not, want not.
• অন্ধকারে ঢিল মারা – Beat about the bush.
•  অর্থই অন অনর্থের মূল – Money is the root cause of all unhappiness.
• আগে ঘর, তবে তো পর – Charity begins at home.
• নিজের ভাল পাগলেও বোঝে – Even a fool knows his business.
• ভাবিয়া করিও কাজ – Look before you leap.
• মাছের তেলে মাছ ভাজা – To gain without spending.
• যতক্ষন শ্বাস, ততক্ষণ আশ – While there is life there is hope.
• কর্তার ইচ্ছায় কর্ম-Master’s will is law.
• যারে দেখতে নারি তার চলন বাঁকা – Faults are thick where love is thin.
