What is an ‘Interjection’? Types of Interjection

What is an ‘Interjection’?

যে part of speech আনন্দ, উদ্দীপনা, ঘৃণা, উত্তেজনা, উৎসাহ, বিস্ময়, দুঃখ, মনোযোগ প্রভৃতির মতো আবেগ, অনুভূতি প্রকাশ ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং যার সাথে ব্যাকরণগতভাবে sentence-এর বাকি অংশের কোন সম্পর্ক থাকে না, তাকেই Interjection বলে।

A part of speech that expresses feelings and emotions like joy, surprise, disgust, excitement, sadness, etc., and which has no grammatical relationships with the rest of the sentence is called Interjection. Interjection words are: Wow! Hey! Well! Alas! Hurrah! etc.

Example:

  • Hurrah! We won the match. (Showing joy)
  • Alas! those school days are gone. (Showing sadness)
  • Wow! That is really great. (Showing surprise and excitement ‍)

Types of Interjection:

There are mainly six types of interjections. These are discussed below.

  • Interjections for Greeting
  • Interjections for Joy
  • Interjections for Approval / Praise
  • Interjections for Surprise
  • Interjections for Grief/Pain/Sorrow
  • Interjections for Attention

Interjections for Greeting:

যখন কারো সংগে দেখা হয়,  তখন তার প্রতি উষ্ণতার অনুভূতি প্রকাশ করতে যে interjection ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাকে interjection for greeting বলে।

The interjections which are used to indicate emotion of warmth towards the other person when they meet are called interjections for greeting . These interjections are: Hello! , Hey! , Hi! etc.

Example:

  • Hey! Good to see you here.
  • Hi! How are your days going?
  • Hello! I’m Rafiq.

Interjections for Joy:

হঠাৎ ঘটে যাওয়া খুশির ঘটনার জন্য তাৎক্ষনিক সুখের অনুভূতি প্রকাশ করতে যে interjection ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাকে interjection for  joy বলে।

The interjections which are used to indicate immediate emotion of happiness on a sudden happy event that occurred are called interjections for joy. These interjections are: Hurrah! , Hurray! , Wow!, Yippee

Example:

  • Hurrah! We’ve won the match!
  • Good! Now we can move on.
  • Wow! What a nice gift!
  • Wow! You are looking great.
  • No school for five weeks – yippee!
  • Yippee! Today is the 26th of March.

Interjections for Approval:

কোন ব্যক্তির দ্বারা কোনোকিছু ঘটে যাওয়ার পক্ষে জোড়ালো সমর্থন প্রকাশ করতে যে interjection ব্যবহৃত হয় তাকে interjections for approval বলে।

The interjections which are used to approval for the deed that happened are called interjections for approval. These interjections are: Bravo! , Brilliant! , Well done! etc.

Example:

  • Bravo! He scored the goal.
  • Well done! You got a good job.
  • Brilliant! You got the highest marks in English.

Interjections for Surprise:

কোন ব্যক্তির দ্বারা কোনোকিছু ঘটে যাওয়ার জন্য তীব্র বিস্ময় প্রকাশ করতে যে interjection ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাকে interjection for surprise বলে।

The interjections which are used by a person for expressing a strong sense of surprise on the occurrence of something are called interjections for surprise. These interjections are: What!, Eh!, Ah!, Oh!, Hey!, etc.

Example:

  • What! His brother died!
  • Ah! It feels good that I got promoted.
  • Eh! That sounds so disgusting.
  • Hey! Rafiq passed the examination.

Interjections for Grief/Pain:

কোন ব্যক্তির জন্য কোনো দুঃখের বা বেদনাদায়ক ঘটনা ঘটে যাওয়ার জন্য তীব্র দুঃখের বা বেদনার অনুভূতি প্রকাশ করতে যে interjection ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাকে interjection for grief/pain /sorrow  বলে।

The interjections which are used by a person for expressing a strong sense of grief/ pain /sorrow on the occurrence of anything unfortunate happened are called interjections for grief/pain/sorrow. These interjections are:  Alas!, Oh!, Ouch!, Ah!, Oops! etc. are some interjections for grief/pain/ sorrow.

Examples:

  • Alas! He is dead.
  • Ah! We have lost the match.
  • Alas! He is no more.
  • Ouch! I hurt my knee.
  • Oops! I’m deeply sorry. That was blunder.

Interjections for Attention:

কোন ব্যক্তি কর্তৃক কোনো কিছুর প্রতি শ্রোতাদের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করার বিষয়টি প্রকাশ করতে যে interjection ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাকে interjection for attention  বলে ।

The interjections which are used by a person to attract the attention of the listeners are called interjections for attention. These interjections are: Listen!, Look!, Behold!, Hush!, etc.

Example:

  • Listen! I will punish you if you do that again.
  • Look! The actor is coming towards us.
  • Hush! Don’t talk.
  • Behold! Who is coming towards us.
